Molluscum Contagiosum is a common childhood cutaneous viral infection caused by the Molluscum Contagiosum Virus (MCV). It is also a common sexually transmitted disease among sexually active adults and people with impaired cellular immunity.
Molluscum Contagiosum is contagious, being spread by direct skin-to-skin contact, and also moist surfaces such as pool furniture, bathroom fixtures, and gym equipment.
The most common sites in the body affected are the head and neck, followed by trunk, upper extremity, genitalia, and lower extremities.
All current treatment options for Molluscum Contagiosum are invasive requiring curettage, freezing, or burning and may cause pain and discomfort.
Often, no treatment is recommended since the Molluscum Warts are 'harmless and eventually will go away'. However, the unsightly rash often spreads, scarring can occur, and while individual warts clear in a matter of months, the condition itself can persist for 3-5 years with recurrent outbreaks.
