What are negative ions?

Ions are charged particles either positive or negative found in the air. They are generated naturally by molecules breaking apart due to sunlight, radiation, high winds or moving water.

The action of ocean waves on a seashore, waterfalls, mountain or hilltops or after a storm or rain shower produce hundreds of thousands of negative ions per cubic centimeter that make people feel so much better.

In fact one of the healthiest places on earth is Niagara Falls, where stress and depression sufferers are known to experience instant relief from the generation of so many negative ions.

An amazing natural therapy

Research carried out by Dr Felix Sulman, head of the Applied Science Department at The University of Jerusalem, with positive and negative ions on a cross section of men and women, showed that when left for about an hour in a room rich in positive ions, the group became irritable and fatigued, yet the same group confined in the same room for the same period of time, in air rich in negative ions, showed a pattern of brainwaves that suggested increase in alertness, reduced stress and improved performance at work.

In another major 16-week trial conducted by Surrey University at the Norwich Union Insurance Group's headquarters, eight negative ion generators were fitted in the computer and data preparation section, the typing area and the motor underwriting department.

Before the tests got under way, the University team spent a month compiling incidence rates of complaints of sickness and headaches. The experiments were 'double- blind' so that neither the staff nor the researchers knew whether the ionisers were on or off at any given time. The most dramatic results were in the airconditioned areas, the incidence of headaches in the computer room being reduced by 78 per cent during the midnight to 08.30 shift. Norwich Union was sufficiently convinced to decide to keep the ionisers, and order another ten ceiling mounted models, giving them 20,000 sq ft of ionised office space. Part of Surrey University's experiments concerned concentration ability and the studies showed that negative ionisation could improve task performance by as much as 28 per cent. In general, the more difficult the task, the more improvement could be accomplished by negative ions.

Ionised air may also play a role in allergies. Research suggests that some allergy provoking substances, such as dust and pollen, have a positive electrical charge. Negative ions however appear to counteract the allergenic effects of these positively charged ions on respiratory tissues.

More recently, research has also shown that negative ions can also reduce the spread of airborne bacterial and viral infection. Hospitals and health centres are increasingly using ionisers to protect patients and staff from airborne infection and pollutants by stripping the air of dust, pollen spores, bacteria and viruses.

Conversely though a lack of negative ions has been associated with depression, lethargy, anxiety, mental problems, even suicides and crimes of violence, difficulty breathing, aching joints, migraines, insomnia and increased susceptibility to infection and disease. In fact when negative ions are denied to animal and plant life, they eventually wither and die.

Exposure to electrical equipment and other sources of positively charged ions have a detrimental effect on health. The unfavourable interactions between humans and positive ions have occurred for millions of years. Indeed ancient folk law has attributed evil effects to certain seasonal winds, which scientists now understand to be highly charged with positive ions.

What's more, most of the elements in our modern day environment act as a vacuum for negative ions. Air conditioning, heating and synthetic fibres in our clothing and furniture cause a severe depletion of negative ions.

Even pollution from car exhausts, cigarette smoke, fluorescent lighting, electrical and electronic equipment, TV screens, overcrowding and even breathing all contribute to negative ion depletion.

Comparisons of the concentration of negative ion levels in our environment show just how depleted negative ion levels are in modern working and home environments

Negative ion concentrations range from 95,000 ' 450,000 along the sea shore, 50,000 ' 100,000 in the countryside, 5,000 ' 50,000 whilst in cities and urban areas. In contrast negative ion concentrations drop to 100-2000 in offices and in homes, concentrations drop even further to 40-100, whilst in air conditioned rooms the negative ion levels are virtually non existent.

Hence, although nature produces negative ions, most people don't live or work in regions high in naturally occurring negative ions.
