Phytosterols

Phytosterols or vegetable sterols are compounds naturally present in vegetable oils. The first phytosterol was discovered in wheatgerm and was later discovered in other vegetables such as corn, olive, canola and soya beans.

Phytosterols are structurally similar to Cholesterol and they compete with the Cholesterol we ingest for absorption through the small intestine. Up to a point, the more Phytosterols present in the intestine, the less Cholesterol absorption will occur. So when you consume Phytosterols, you inhibit the intestinal absorption of Cholesterol by the body which leads to a decrease in flow of dietary Cholesterol towards the liver and a consequent reduction in the endogenous secretion of LDL Cholesterol by the liver, whilst the Phytosterols themselves are naturally flushed through the system without being absorbed into the body as well.

Red Yeast Rice

Red Yeast Rice is an Asian dietary supplement that is made by fermenting red yeast in rice. It contains several compounds collectively known as Monacolins that are known to inhibit Cholesterol synthesis by restricting the livers production of Cholesterol.

Red Yeast Rice has been found to help reduce total Cholesterol levels, lower levels of bad LDL Cholesterol, increase levels of good HDL Cholesterol and lower levels of unhealthy fats called Triglycerides.

Chromium Picolinate

Recent research indicates that Chromium may be useful in lowering Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels, whilst at the same time raising good HDL Cholesterol levels.

It is necessary amongst other things for the breakdown of protein, fat and carbohydrates.

Policosanol

Policosanol consists of a mixture of fatty alcohols derived from waxes of sugar cane, yams and beeswax. The main ingredient of Policosanol is Octanosol. It is thought that the alcohols in Policosanol act on Cholesterol metabolism in the liver, but at different parts of the metabolic pathway when compared with Statins.

Human studies have suggested that bad LDL Cholesterol can be reduced to a degree similar to that achieved by Statins and that good HDL Cholesterol can be increased by as much as 10-25%, an effect difficult to achieve with Statins alone.

Gamma Oryzanol

Gamma Oryzanol is a compound found in grains, used to decrease bad LDL Cholesterol levels in the blood and has also been used to help manage hot flushes in women going through the menopuase.
