Description:
What is blood pressure?
The heart is the body's pump, forcing blood round the body. Blood pressure is recorded as Systolic Pressure, the pressure at which blood is pushed out of the heart and into the arteries and Diastolic Pressure, the pressure of the blood in the arteries between heart beats when the heart is at rest.
Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day constantly adjusting itself to stresses in the workplace, physical exercise and changing moods.
The risks of high blood pressure
When your blood pressure continuously exceeds the norm (130/85 mmHg) at rest, it can become a risk.
In addition, obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, high salt diets and high cholesterol can contribute to high blood pressure. Blood pressure can also increase significantly after middle age.
And with high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries accelerates and the body becomes more susceptible to heart attack and strokes. With no external symptoms, it's no wonder why regular self monitoring is so important.
High blood pressure is one of the most common illnesses of our times. Every seventh adult is affected by it and left untreated can lead to kidney failure, heart attack or stroke.
High blood pressure is often called the silent killer, because so often high blood pressure may not manifest itself with any symptoms. The heart silently suffers.
You cannot feel when your blood pressure exceeds normal values. Only measuring your blood pressure at regular intervals will ensure that you are aware any possible risk of high blood pressure.
Only your regular measurements provide security.
Why it is important to measure blood pressure at home
Blood pressure measurements during a doctor's visit are only snapshots and having your blood pressure measured by a nurse or a doctor in a hospital or clinic can itself trigger high blood pressure and falsify measurements. This is often referred to as 'White Coat Hypertension' and can affect Systolic readings by as much as 30mmHg!
In addition, just one measurement taken periodically is not enough to give a true and accurate indication of blood pressure.
That is why monitoring your blood pressure yourself regularly at home is so much more thorough and also seen as giving a much more accurate picture of your blood pressure than leaving it to periodic measurements in a hospital or clinic.
Only by measuring your blood pressure regularly are you able to learn about your body and to monitor how your lifestyle impacts on your blood pressure.
The ideal blood pressure reading is your 'Fundamental Blood Pressure' taken first thing in the morning after getting up and before taking any food, but if not convenient readings may be taken at any time of the day. It is useful however, to take readings at the same time of day so that you are consistent and are comparing 'like with like'.
Using the SURESIGN AUTOMATIC BLOOD PRESSURE AND PULSE UPPER ARM MONITOR regularly not only provides real time measurements of your blood pressure, but gives you an indication of any trends in your blood pressure that might require further consultation with your Medical Practitioner and also provides you with information about how well you are responding to Blood Pressure Treatments and Medication.
The SURESIGN AUTOMATIC BLOOD PRESSURE AND PULSE UPPER ARM MONITOR enables you to monitor your blood pressure at home much more thoroughly than periodic measurements in a hospital or clinic.
Wrist Monitors vs Upper Arms Monitors
For people with conditions that cause circulatory problems such as Diabetes, Kidney Disease, Arteriosclerosis or Poor Peripheral Circulation, a Wrist Monitor may give potentially innacurate readings and so an Upper Arm Monitor would be more appropriate.
How to take your blood pressure with your SURESIGN AUTOMATIC BLOOD PRESSURE AND PULSE UPPER ARM MONITOR.
Just follow the simple steps detailed in your Instruction Booklet
Ideally take your blood pressure seated upright at a table with your elbow on the table and your Pressure Cuff at the same level as your heart
Fit the Pressure Cuff around your upper arm about 2cms from your elbow with the display on the palm side of your wrist. The Pressure Cuff is to fit around arms 19-32cm
Plug the Air Tube into the Air Jack
Fasten the Pressure Cuff snugly
Press the On/Off Button to turn on the Monitor
The Pressure Cuff auto inflates to 195mmHG and then gradually decreases until a pulse is detected
The Monitor displays your Systolic and Diastolic Reading and Heart Pulse Rate
After each blood pressure measurement, your Systolic, Diastolic and Heart Pulse Rate together with time and date are stored automatically. The memory holds the last 36 measurements
To recall, simply press the 'M Button' to display the last recorded set of measurements
Press the 'M Button' again to read the next line of stored data
