Homocysteine Hcy is a naturally occurring amino acid present in the blood. Elevated levels of Homocysteine Hcy cause cholesterol to change to something called oxidised low-density lipoprotein that promotes the build up of plaque on blood vessel walls, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease (reduced blood flow to the legs and feet).

Evidence also suggests that excessive Homocysteine Hcy levels may have an effect on atherosclerosis by damaging the inner lining of arteries, interfering with healthy clotting factors by promoting blood clots.

Most people with a high Homocysteine Hcy level don't get enough folic acid or B Vitamins in their diet. Other causes of high Homocysteine levels include low levels of thyroid hormone, kidney disease, psoriasis, some medicines and ageing.

Description:

Even moderately elevated Homocysteine Hcy levels are a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease and many studies have also found an association between high Homocysteine Hcy with impaired cognitive performance and dementia development and progression.

In fact US HIS panellist Dr Allan Spreen believes that Homocysteine Hcy is a far more important indicator of arteriosclerosis risk than cholesterol and actively reducing Homocysteine Hcy levels can have a dramatic effect on heart health and circulation.

Just a 3umol/L drop in Homocysteine Hcy, lessens the likelihood of heart attacks by 16%, strokes by 24% and deep vein thrombosis by 25%, whilst a 5umol/L decrease in Homocysteine Hcy, reduces the risk of death from all causes by 49%, death from cardiovascular disease by 50% and death from cancer by 26%.

Betaine Trimethyglycine is a naturally occurring nutrient derived from sugar beet that in synergy with other key nutrients, helps to reduce potentially harmful levels of Homocysteine Hcy. Betaine Trimethyglycine functions at its best when in synergy with folic acid and Vitamins B12 and B6, to break down Homocysteine Hcy and reduce harmful levels in the bloodstream.

Homocysteine Hcy levels may be reduced with additional folates in the diet. But whilst additional doses of folate may work for some, folates may not be enough for cases of elevated Homocysteine Hcy levels.

Recent studies at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, have shown Betaine Trimethyglycine to be very effective at lowering levels of Homocysteine Hcy.

A study of 79 subjects grouped to receive 1.5gms and 6gms of Betaine Trimethyglycine Supplement and a placebo daily, revealed that after just one day the 1.5gm group had an average Homocysteine Hcy level 16% lower than the average placebo group, whilst in the 6gm group, the average reduction in Homocysteine Hcy levels was a full 35% when compared with the placebo group.

At the end of the study, the results were even more impressive. Subjects in the 1.5gm group had an average Homocysteine Hcy level 23% lower than the placebo and in the 6gm group, the average level was 45% lower. The Wageningen researchers concluded that these significant drops in Homocysteine Hcy showed that a Betaine Trimethyglycine Supplement or a Betaine Trimethyglycine rich diet might lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In addition to lowering Homocysteine Hcy levels Betaine Trimethyglycine also assists in the processing of fats in the liver. And some studies have shown that Betaine Trimethyglycine may also help protect the liver from damage caused by chemicals and excess alcohol.
