GRAVIOLA is rich in a novel set of bioactive compounds called Annonaceous Acetogenins that may help promote healthy cells in the human body.

GRAVIOLA is a small upright evergreen tree 5 to 6 metres high with large glossy dark green leaves. It produces a large heart shaped edible fruit that is 15 to 23 cm in diameter, yellow green in colour with white flesh inside.

The GRAVIOLA fruit is eaten extensively in South America where it is called GUANABANA or BRAZILIAN CHERIMOYA and sold in local markets to be pulped for making drinks and sherbets or although sour and acidic tasting eaten as a fruit.

Description:

Three separate research groups in laboratory tests have found that Annonaceous Acetogenins may be selectively active against tumour cells in the lung, the breast, prostate, pancreas, colon, liver and lymphoma as well as a special affinity for drug resistant cells without harming healthy cells.

One study demonstrated that an isolated compound in GRAVIOLA was selectively cytotoxic to colon adenocarcinoma cells showing it had 10,000 times the potency of Andramycin a leading chemotherapy drug.

The mode of action studies in three separate laboratories have recently determined that these Acetogenins are superb inhibitors of enzyme processes that are only found in the membranes of cancerous tumour cells.

This is why whilst toxic to cancer cells Annonaceous Acetogenins have no toxicity to healthy cells.

Researchers in Taiwan reported in 2003 that the main Graviola Acetogenin, Annonacin, was highly toxic to ovarian, cervical, breast, bladder and skin cancer cell lines at very low dosages saying; 'Annonacin is a promising anti-cancer agent and worthy of further animal studies and, we would hope, clinical trials'.

Given that natural GRAVIOLA is not patentable, pharmaceutical companies all over the world are attempting to synthesise the patentable actives from GRAVIOLA, but to date they have never been able to replicate it, hence there is no synthetic drug equivalent available.
